Quick Answer for Busy Parents

For swimming, a 2-year old is recommended to wear sun-protective swimwear, a swim nappy, a buoyancy aid or armbands, swimming goggles, aqua shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hooded towel.

These items support comfort, confidence, and protection for both indoor and outdoor swimming.

Every child is different, but the following items are commonly recommended to help toddlers enjoy swimming safely and comfortably.

Sun-Protective Swimwear

Sun-protective swimwear is recommended to help protect delicate skin and keep toddlers comfortable in and out of the water. Rash vests paired with swim shorts offer practical coverage while allowing freedom of movement.

This is helpful for outdoor swimming and holidays, and many parents also choose sun-protective styles for indoor pools because they’re comfortable and versatile.

Swim Nappy

At age two, a swim nappy is recommended and often required by swimming pools. Reusable swim nappies are popular with parents as they’re comfortable and designed specifically for water use.

Buoyancy Aid or Armbands

Buoyancy aids or armbands are commonly recommended for both indoor and outdoor swimming to help support early water confidence. They can make swimming feel more secure for toddlers, especially while they’re still learning how water feels.

These should always be used with close adult supervision.

Swimming Goggles

Swimming goggles are optional, but many toddlers find them helpful. Goggles can protect young eyes from chlorine or saltwater and help children feel more confident when splashing or putting their face in the water.

Aqua Shoes

Aqua shoes are recommended to protect little feet from hot surfaces, slippery pool edges, pebbles, or shells. They’re especially useful at the beach, around outdoor pools, and in changing areas.

Sunscreen (SPF 50+)

Sunscreen is recommended for outdoor swimming and sunny days, even when wearing sun-protective clothing. Applying sunscreen to exposed areas and reapplying regularly helps support overall sun safety.

Sunglasses

Toddlers’ eyes are sensitive to UV rays, so sunglasses designed for young children are recommended for outdoor swimming and poolside play. They help reduce glare and protect developing eyes.

Hooded Towel

After swimming, a hooded towel is recommended to keep toddlers warm, dry, and cosy. Hooded towels are especially comforting after busy swim sessions and help protect skin from wind or lingering sun exposure.

Indoor and Outdoor Swimming — One Simple Approach

Rather than having separate rules for indoor and outdoor swimming, many parents find it easier to use one flexible checklist and adapt it to their environment.

  • Indoor pools may not require sunscreen or sunglasses
  • Outdoor swimming and holidays usually benefit from extra sun protection
