Hello, sun-safe explorers!
Larry Lizard and Lizzy Lizard love beach days, swimming, splashing, sandcastles and seaside adventures. But before they race off into the sunshine, they always remember their Sun Safety Superpowers.
The sun can be lots of fun, but its rays can be very strong. That’s why Larry and Lizzy are here to help you learn how to stay cool, covered and protected while you play.

What Is UV?
UV stands for ultraviolet. That is a type of sunlight we cannot see.
Here’s the sneaky bit: You can still get UV rays on cloudy days, even when the sun is hiding!
Larry says: “If the sky is bright, think sun safety!”
Meet UVA and UVB
UV rays come from the sun, but there are different types. Two of the main ones are called UVA and UVB.
UVA rays can reach your skin even when it does not feel very hot outside. They can also get through some clouds, which is why sun safety still matters on bright but cloudy days.
UVB rays are the rays that are most likely to make your skin go red or sore if you spend too long in the sun.
Larry says: “UVA and UVB may be invisible, but they can still reach you!”
Lizzy says: "That’s why we use all our sun safety superpowers together — UV swimwear, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, shade and water!”
A good way to remember it is:
- UVA = sneaky rays
- UVB = burning rays
You do not need to be scared of the sunshine. Just be sun-smart, cover up, and enjoy your adventures safely.
Note for grown-ups: When choosing sunscreen, look for SPF 30 or higher to help protect against UVB rays, plus 4 or 5-star UVA protection or the UVA circle symbol. Sunscreen works best when used together with sun-safe clothing, hats, sunglasses and shade, rather than as the only form of protection.
